Lost foam casting is an advanced manufacturing process used to produce complex metal parts. The production line consists of several critical stages that ensure the quality and precision of the final product.
Pattern Creation: The process begins with the creation of a foam pattern, typically made from expanded polystyrene. This pattern closely resembles the final casting and can be produced using CNC machines for high accuracy.
Coating: The foam pattern is then coated with a refractory material, which may include a mixture of sand and resin. This coating forms a shell around the foam, providing the necessary strength during the subsequent stages.
Molding: Once coated, the foam patterns are placed in a molding box filled with fine sand. This sand supports the coating and retains the shape of the final product.
Pattern Removal: The next stage involves heating the mold, causing the foam pattern to vaporize. This process leaves behind a cavity that represents the final part.
Metal Pouring: Molten metal is then poured into the cavity, filling the space left by the vaporized foam.
Cooling and Finishing: After the metal has cooled and solidified, the mold is broken away to reveal the cast part. Final processes such as machining or surface treatment may be applied to achieve the desired specifications.
